Collaborative Law

When couples or families separate, they face many serious issues that must be resolved. These include parenting of your children (custody/access), financial matters, child and spousal support, property division and others. You have various options: court/litigation, mediation, mediation/arbitration, or collaborative law.

Resolution of these issues without court is the essence of collaborative law. Child focused and client focused, everything is done by discussion and negotiation, not litigation. You and your lawyers contract not to go to court. Instead, you agree to work toward settlement. While the collaborative process is informed by legal precedent, you can often create solutions specifically tailored to your circumstances. Each of your lawyers must have taken special training in collaborative practice, as have the other experts (e.g. financial, accounting or mental health professionals) who may be necessary and helpful to the process.
